In order to be content and fulfilled in our careers, it is vital that your personality matches your occupation and work environment. Why? Because job satisfaction is at its highest when your job engages your strong personality traits and is in alignment with your values and preferences.
Stress at work is lower when responsibilities correspond to our God-given personality traits. Job requirements that conflict with our personalities lead to significant dissatisfaction, emotional upheaval, and employee absenteeism.
God’s Truth Revealed
Likewise with our relationship with God. I know this sounds presumptuous, but hear me out.
God put a lot of thought into creating each of us. It says in Ephesians 1 that God chose us before the creation of the world and that He makes everything work according to His plan.
In Psalm 139, God tells us that He knit us together personally and that He knows our thoughts and keeps us safe.
Because the Bible is full of Truth, these verses show us that God loved us so much that He created us SPECIFICALLY for the path He chose for us with the personality He gave us.
Therefore, our relationship with God is going to look different for everyone. My personality and experiences are unique. Therefore, the way I connect with God is also unique.
Uniquely Created to Connect
There are generalities to personalities that we can discover through personality testing, but you will notice that not every point describes you perfectly. This is where your experiences, attitudes, family rules, and present environment affect your preferences.
There are generalities for how we connect with God – through prayer, through connection with the Holy Spirit, through gatherings with others who love Him – but NO ONE ELSE’S relationship with God will be exactly like yours.
Is that not awe-inspiring? Because God created you as a unique human being, He relates to you in a way that He does not relate to anyone else. And that is humbling, exciting, and amazing.
Boxes are for Storage
We try to pigeonhole ourselves into a boxed relationship with God. But He can’t be contained in a box, and neither can our relationship with Him.
So, stop comparing your relationship with God with that of others and ask Him what He wants this relationship to look like. Ask Him how the personality He has given you and the longing in your heart will meld into an amazingly personal relationship with Him.
